You can see from the outfits I've posted on the blog that my high-waist skinny jeans are my most worn item(s). You could probably consider me an expert jeans-wearer. But, we all have a style we prefer. Many love the laid-back boyfriend, while some opt for the classic boot-cut. Not to mention the flare, which has made a big comeback lately. But sometimes it can be difficult to make certain styles look chic. So, click on through for a crash course on how to wear any pair of jeans you may come across
When it comes to figuring out how to incorporate denim into a stylish outfit, there are three rules I like to adhere to:
1. When in doubt, cuff/roll.
2. Take note of the wash.
And, the golden rule;
3. It's all about the shoes.
Taking these rules into account, let's look at some ways to style different silhouettes of jeans.
Bootcut
The classic bootcut is probably the most universally-worn cut of jeans out there. This style is fitted through the knee and casually flares out to allow room for a boot. In my experience, they're not the easiest to style into a chic outfit. However, finding a flattering pair and following our golden rule, you can pull together a comfortable look and still look stylish. I suggest going with ballet flats or sandals with bootcuts. I like to pair a high-waisted pair with a relaxed tank or tee. Add a belt and a half-tuck and you're good to go.
Skinny
Of course, I couldn't leave out the skinny jean. They look great on everyone, come in a myriad of colors, and can be worn with practically anything. I love to wear them with the cuffs rolled with sandals and sneakers during the summer. They're also the only jeans I wear with boots during warmer months. You really can't go wrong with this cut!
Flare
70's-inspired fashion is all the rage in the fashion world lately; enter flare-leg jeans. These are basically an exaggerated bootcut; fitted through the thigh with a wide flare at the end. As far as styling these, one word: wedges. The large flare of the leg hides the platform of the wedge, creating the illusion of mile-long legs and a flattering silhouette.
Boyfriend
Wanting to venture out of your denim comfort zone? The boyfriend jean has become a popular staple in recent years. These jeans, as their name suggests, are straight-legged and loose-fitting, as if you threw on a pair of men's jeans. They are usually cuffed and fall mid-calf. These jeans were made for heels. A white button down and heels with a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans makes for a great contrast of business-meets-casual. (Bonus tip: tuck in half of your shirttail for an even more laid-back look.)
Overalls
Another style that's been trending lately is overalls. Whether it's the classic style or "shortalls," overalls are a great way to switch up your usual outfits. During the warmer months, I like to wear a crop top and sandals with shortalls for a laid-back look. During winter, skinny overalls, ankle boots, and a baggy sweater offers a stylish look to keep you toasty.
Bonus: Jean Jacket
Of course, you can't forget the denim jacket. It's a staple for any woman's closet. While I'm definitely not afraid to wear double denim, I love to pair this classic piece with black or white jeans. For me, a jean jacket really shines in a simple, neutral look. I also never over accessorize. A couple of dainty gold necklaces and a watch will do the trick with this look.
What's your favorite denim style? How do you style it? Do tell!
